SEAC is hiring!
The Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC) is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our organization as a youth, student and community organizer on climate change issues in their region and to act as a liaison with the Energy Action Coalition (EAC) and the Rainforest Action Network (RAN). This position is full time and may be based in the Southeast, Midwest, Northeast or San Francisco CA dependent on the skills of the applicant and the region she/he is in.
SEAC is a student and youth run national network of progressive organizations and individuals whose aim is to uproot environmental injustices through action and education. We define the environment to include the physical, economic, political, and cultural conditions in which we live. By challenging the power structure which threatens these conditions, students in SEAC work to create progressive social change on both the local and global levels.
Focus:
The top priorities for this position are building the youth climate movement in the region of focus, helping to coordinate chapters nationally and connecting SEAC with our partner organizations: Energy Action Coalition (EAC) and Rainforest Action Network (RAN).
Responsibilities:
This position entails being a regional organizer on the Campus Climate Challenge (CCC). The Campus Climate Challenge, founded by EAC, is a project of more than 40 leading youth organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The Challenge leverages the power of young people to organize on college campuses, high schools and communities across Canada and the U.S. to achieve a clean and just energy future. This year the CCC is expanding its work to connect more students to community campaigns for green jobs and calling for no new coal. The CCC work will also include a way for young people to strategically engage the presidential elections around global warming and development. This work is still developing, but SEAC and this position will play a role in it.
SEAC expects this organizer to qualitatively mentor and organize with at least 6-12 geographic pockets of youth working on the CCC, including weekly check-ins and several face to face visits a year.
As SEAC's EAC liaison, the organizer will be responsible for supporting the creation of EACs programmatic work and facilitating communication between SEAC and EAC. As the RAN liaison, the organizer will connect SEAC groups with RAN's resources, campaigns, and trainers and plug RAN groups into SEAC’s structures.
Details of the position:
This will be a full time position. Compensation is $18,500 a year + travel. It is expected that two days a week and some holidays will be non-work personal days. It is expected that the organizer take at least three weeks and no more than 6 weeks of days off per year. SEAC is building the long term power of the environmental and environmental justice movements and will be unable to do this if they burnout, go really insane, or sell their soul o corporate america, which is the same thing as going insane.
Qualifications:
SEAC is looking for someone who has demonstrated commitment to working for justice and anti-oppression. This position requires someone who is self motivated, an excellent communicator and knows how to delegate tasks. Prior experience organizing students/youth is required. Knowledge about struggles to stop fossil fuels and dirty energy in the region should be developed to enhance this organizer's involvement in present campaigns.
How to Apply:
If you think you would make a great member of our team, please send a resume and cover letter to madeline@seac.org. The deadline is rolling, but priority will be given to applications received by March 5th 2008. Feel free to email with questions.
