Action Tactics

Banner Drops
Drop a banner from a high spot. Big Banner. Good photo-op. Note possibility of arrest. (See section below on civil disobedience.)

Bird-dogging
This is the art of hijacking a media event that your target organized with the intention of using it for your own purposes. A small group of activists can infiltrate an event with a hidden banner (like attending an election rally with an “Nuclear Executives for Gore” banner), releasing it at a strategic time. One or two activists should leaflet the crowd explaining why you protested, and handle the questions from the media. An advantage is that all of the media work that your opponent did will be used to your advantage.

Chalking
Get a couple buckets of sidewalk chalk and decorate campus. Chalking is cheap, fun, creative, and effective. Some schools don’t like it, but it’s pretty harmless and if you do it late at night, you’ll avoid scrutiny. You can use it to educate, advertise, or put pressure on your administration (Ex.: by chalking a critique of a university policy the night before a lot of alumni or parents are visiting campus).
